The twenties

In the late twenties, the business of the Ohrems derived from own farming and the connected transport by horse carriage.

Due to the installation of power plants in the adjacency, more and more industrial companies were founded in Knapsack.

The increased demand for transport companies, which bring material for the construction of the industrial buildings and take away the masses of excaved earth, made Johann-Josef Ohrem dealing with this business.

The thirties

The casual transportation orders were added by an increasing number of orders for transportation of goods for the chemical industry, located in the Knapsack area. Thus, Johann-Josef Ohrem focused on this business when founding his forwarding agency.

The initially moderate fleet, consisting of one horse, was increased to 3 HP. The horses’ names (Bubi, Hector, Victor) are still well-known at the company.

At the end of the decade, the horse carriages were supplemented by trucks (dump trucks). These times were characterized by moderate growth: almost every 2 – 3 years the fleet was increasd by one truck.

The fourties (Second World War)

At the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the company’s business was considerably reduced. This was due to expropriations of extensive parts of fleet and staff by the Armed Forces. Only a limited business could be held up during these times.

After the end of the war in 1945, the company regained possession of trucks, which had been left behind by the Armed Forces after the breakdown of the West Front. Thus, the foundations for the restart of business activities were laid.

The second half of the decade was characterized by reconstruction of the industrial facilities in the Knapsack area that had been destroyed during the war. The company invested in an excavator in order to accelerate the construction of business facilities.

The fifties (economic miracle)

Due to the booming economic revival in the fifties, the company was able to extend its business. The consequence was a fleet and staff extension.

A modern office building was added to the premises. Due to orders of a phosphor factory in Knapsack, raw materials such as clay and silica grit were transported from nearby pits to the respective industrial companies by means of conventional dumping trucks.

The removal of the waste product phosphor slag and its dumping were also carried out by the forwarding agency. For this purpose, the company ran a dumping ground, which was worked with special equipment.

The sixties

The already acquired competence in handling chemical goods made Johann-Josef Ohrem specialize his business further.

Meanwhile, the transport of phosphoric acid to customers of the chemical industry was carried out Europe-wide. For this purpose, special tank trucks were purchased. The transport of tripolyphospates to the customers (e.g. of the detergent industriy) was also effected by special bulk material transporters.

For the first time, food transportation was made by separate tank trucks.

In 1966, the owner Johann-Josef Ohrem passed away: The management of the company was taken over by his son, Hans.

The seventies

The eighties

The existing premises did not allow for any further expansion. Therefore, in 1983, Hans Ohrem decided to move his business from the residential area Alt-Hürth (Ölbruchstraße) to the industrial area Knapsack.

At the new premises in Kirchstraße 3, the company was reestablished. Part of the premises are an office building, a garage and the rinsing hall.

In 1989, 4 aluminium tower silos of 300 sqm in size were built. They serve as storage space for plastics.

The ninetie

After breakdown of the German Democratic Republic and opening of borders, the company invested in Eastern Germany. Thus, new jobs were created at the traditional chemical-industry location Bitterfeld. In 1997, the premises were expanded.

In 1991, the silo works in Hürth were expanded further by addition of 8 further aluminium tower silos. Four years later, in 1995, a building of 1,500 sqm in size for storage of grained plastics was built near the company.
